What is Event Tracking?
Event tracking is the ability to record any visitor action — a payment, a download, a scroll, a sign-up — and tie it back to a specific visitor's session. With Opentracker's website tracker, inserting data (events) can be accomplished by submitting an event to our logging servers with a secure HTTPS request.
A Flexible, Powerful API
The website tracker API has been designed to be fast, redundant, fault-tolerant, and scalable for high-volume events. It allows Opentracker customers to store event data with both GET and POST requests. Any internet-enabled environment — static HTML pages, dynamic webpages, CMS platforms, CRMs, smartphones — can send API requests.
Types of Events You Can Track
- Single Events: Send any event with a simple JavaScript call.
- Multi-dimensional Events: Send multiple event key/pair data entries in one call.
- Email Events: Automatically added to user profiles and ranked in Top Emails reports.
- Purchase Events: Link a revenue value to a specific visitor's journey.
- Custom Variables: Add industry sectors, product categories, or any variable that matters to your business.
Why Custom Events Matter
Standard analytics tell you how many people visited a page. Custom events tell you what those people actually did — and crucially, which actions led to revenue. This is the difference between vanity metrics and actionable intelligence.
