Cross-Domain Tracking: Follow Your Users Across Every Touchpoint

What is Cross-Domain Tracking?

Cross-domain tracking is the ability to follow a user across completely different domains. For example, if you have two websites — one selling hotel bookings and a second renting cars — cross-domain tracking is the ability to follow the same user across both domains, and/or through a checkout shopping cart hosted on a third-party domain.

Why Does It Matter?

Technically, this is the ability to identify and keep visitor information across sessions AND domains, right through to shopping carts. This is known as session attribution data — meaning you can attribute the purchase or conversion to the original source. The goal is to track a single user across two or more domains and count this person as one visitor, while being able to track their behaviour over time.

Benefits of Cross-Domain Tracking

  1. Track conversion when visitors are referred from site A to site B, using a link or banner.
  2. Serve visitor-specific content based on user history built from behaviour across different website domains.
  3. Ease of installation: achieve tracking across all domains with a single tracking script.

Who Needs This?

In your company, it's probably Marketing who want to know about people signing up who may originate from different internal sources. E-commerce businesses with separate checkout domains, publishers with multiple content sites, and any business that sends visitors from one web property to another all benefit from cross-domain tracking.
