personal ip addresses / individual user tagging

Postby camberleyonthenet » 24 Apr 2003 14:48

I thought of an idea of assigning peoples names to ip addresses...

so when a visitor goes to a site and you know that the ip address is for your mate dave, when he comes back the ip address field could say dave instead of his ip address, if his ip address doesnt have a name assigned to it then it could just display the ip address as it normally does.

I have tried lookin on the site for this function but i couldnt find it. I think it would be handy though.. a bit like a "caller line identity" you get with mobile phones. If the persons number is stored in the phonebook it flashes up with their name. That sort of thing.

Cheers

Good idea camber.

On my site my users have some very individual usernames. Now i have just joined opentracker with my site, i'm finding it quite difficult to recognise members with just the ip address and it would be great to be able to assign names to ip address.

I have to say at this point that some of the areas you can look up are very useful, although because i have never used a tracking service like this before it's still pretty confusing to me... but give me time, i'll soon have it worked out.

Kind regards,

soulman

Hi Soulman,

Welcome to Opentracker.

We are currently building a feature called "user tagging". This feature will place several blank fields in each user profile. This means that for each visitor, you will be able to insert any relevant notes, for example, email address, client number, forum member, "signed up for newsletter", etc.

The way we imagine this will work is as you have described, you can slot info into any visitor profile, once you have made the connection. For example you can match the individual user names that you refer to along with the user's clickstreams.

Another problem with ip address lookup (which you refer to) is that increasingly we are seeing dynamic ip addresses, meaning that the same user will come back with a different ip address. For this reason we use a combination of ip address, timestamp & cookie.

Hi otsupport...thanks for the welcome.

I'm really glad your going for this feature as it think it will be very useful indeed. I'm aware of the dynamic ip address problem, but i'm glad to see you're already on to it.

Any ideas when this feature will come in?

Kind regards,

soulman

well, we have posted schedules before and ended up spending longer than we thought on the development process. Therefore we stopped posting dates.

What we will say is that we were testing the new database today and getting exactly the numbers that we wanted to see, in terms of report generation speeds.

To explain, we are going to release a new database and then build all the new features on top of it. Until the new database is released no new features will be available. The good news however, is that while a database takes months to (re)configure, a typical feature takes 2-3 days to build, its really only a question of building the interface for each feature.

That's why its taking us so long to rebuild the database, because we have to plan for every feature that we are going to build in the future.
